Review: The lie (ARC) by Karina Halle

The lie by Karina Halle

Their love led to a lie
Their truth led to the end

Brigs McGregor is crawling out from the ashes. After losing his wife and son in a car accident and his job from his subsequent downward spiral, he's finally moving forward, getting a prestigious teaching position at the University of London and a new life in the city. Slowly, but surely, he's pushing past the guilt and putting his tragic past behind him.

Until he sees her.

Natasha Trudeau once loved a man so much she thought she'd die without him. But their love was wrong, doomed from the start, and when their world crashed around them, Natasha was nearly buried in the rubble. It took years of moving on to forget him, and now that she's in London, she's ready to start again.

Until she sees him.

Because some loves are too dangerous to ever indulge.
And some loves are far too powerful to ignore.
Their love just might be the life and the death of them.

My rating:

*minor spoilers*

Oh Brigs you break my heart.. From the previous book I knew Brigs' story wasn't gonna be a happy one and knowing the whole story, now really makes me feel even more sad for him.

Brigs lost his wife and little boy in a car accident a few years ago, not handling the loss he lost his job as well. Finally after all this time he gets another shot, a job at the University of London. A new life. A chance for him to move forward.
Or so he thought.. until he sees the one thing he also lost all those years ago. Natasha.
When Natasha lost the man she loved with all her heart she ran. She lived in France for years trying to get over him and move on. She's back in London, ready to start her life again and get her degree. At the University of London where she sees the one person she thought was gone to her forever. Brigs.

Still I whister, "How much more?"
I wish my voice didn't shake.
He stares at me sadly and shakes his head. "A terrible amount."

I could feel my heart racing that first moment when Brigs sees Natasha and she sees him. So wonderfull emotional. The moment they both decide to move on is the moment they find a way back to eachother.

"Everthing," I tell her with a pure ache in my chest. "I see Natasha. I see everything I shouldn't want. Everything I do want. Everything that makes the world keep turning on its axis. You have no idea what you do to me. No idea."

I loved how the book was set so we were experiencing the past along with the present. We saw what they meant to eachother as we slowly see how much they still mean to eachother even after all these years. Despite that however there are obstacles, it isn't easy for them to find their way back to eachother. They both have to let go of a lot of guilt which doesn't come easily even more so because of the way it all started. The dual POV really makes you see how much they mean to eachother, past and present.

"I love you. You don't seem to realize how your soul belongs with mine."

I really felt for these two, all I wanted was for them to get their happy end. They deserved it after everything.
Karina Halle once again creates one sotry that's emotional, heartfelt and everything else that will make you feel with your whole body for these characters and their story.

"I love you," I whisper, running my thumb over her beautiful lips. "You've done something to me, awakened a heart in my soul. You have completely enchanted me, my girl, and I am powerless against you. You've taken me from the very start."

"But you know, you're something close to magic, Natasha. I'm not going to treat you like you're anyting less. You deserved to be wooed and wined and dined."

"You can't see it because you're in it, but you dote on that dog like nothing else." She looks back at my mother. "When I'm not over, the dog sleeps with Brigs, in bed, under the covers."

"....Loving Brigs is my second chance to finally be alive."
